Social Signaling and Communication: People with emotional over-control often struggle with effective social signaling. RO-DBT helps individuals improve their ability to communicate emotional states and engage in authentic social interactions.
Emotional Expression and Vulnerability: RO-DBT encourages individuals to open up emotionally, take interpersonal risks, and be vulnerable, even when it feels uncomfortable or scary.
Flexibility vs. Rigidity: The therapy helps individuals move from rigid, "rules-based" thinking to a more flexible, adaptive approach to life. This shift can be difficult for individuals who tend to prefer structure and control.
Engagement with Uncertainty: A key part of the therapy is working with the discomfort that arises from uncertainty or ambiguity, which is often intolerable for those with emotional over-control.
-
RO-DBT may be helpful for individuals who:
Tend to be perfectionistic, rigid, or highly self-controlled
Have difficulty expressing emotions or being vulnerable with others
Struggle with uncertainty or feel a strong need for control
Frequently overthink, ruminate, or become stuck in rigid patterns
Want closer relationships but find openness and connection difficult
-
DBT is designed for individuals with emotional dysregulation, who struggle with intense, out-of-control emotions. It focuses on helping people manage and regulate their emotions.
RO-DBT is aimed at individuals who struggle with emotional over-control. These individuals tend to suppress or avoid emotions, and RO-DBT encourages them to become more open to experiencing and expressing their emotions, improving social connection and psychological flexibility.
